Spain - Gran Canaria
History and General Information
From exotic dunes in the south, to Mountainous landscapes in the central regions Gran Canaria has its own natural beauty. While the area around Playa del Ingles is more commercialized, a short drive can take you to picturesque coastal areas, or inland to pretty villages. Living in Playa del Ingles for 3 months gave me a real feel of the island. Between January and April the temperature rose from 20 – 30oC.
How does Gran Canaria get its name?
You may think it derives itself from the bird – this is not the case. Tradition has it that explorers brought 2 gigantic dogs (canes) and that large dogs inhabited the canaries. Opposite Las Palmas Cathedral there are statues of the bronze dogs to which the Canary Islands owe their name.
