Sail on by ………

gcacnv00092 Take a leisurely half day cruise on a catamaran or Turkish gullet from Puerto Rico. This resort is the warmest part of the island, constructed in the 70’s. White holiday apartments line the rocky hillsides, and the central area has a commercial centre.

We sailed from Puerto Rico as far west as Playa de Guigui. There’s also an opportunity to go for a dip, viewing mount Teide in the distance. Plenty of gulls including endangered species nest in the volcanic cliff face. Bring those binoculars! gcacnv00091

With an 80% chance of seeing dolphins, I decided to set sail from Puerto Rico . The trip lasts for around 2 hours. The boat stops for at least 20 minutes to watch small dolphins. They usually congregate in small groups. Simply magic! gcbcnv00147 gcbcnv00150

More fun and water?

Visit Aqua land, a short drive north of Ingles. The park has all the rides you can imagine and swimming with cheeky sea lions is an unforgettable experience. Situated in Aqua land, a large paddling pool, 3 sea lions and their master does the trick. After instructions on ‘how to’ just lie on your back and ‘go with the flow!’ Definitely lots of fun and splashing around! gcacnv00146 gcacnv00151 gca_poolphoto1 gca_poolphoto2

Camel Capers

For a flavour of the Sahara why not ride a dromedary across the dunes. The camels won’t say boo to a goose (they are muzzled) and it’s a fun, gentle and alternative way to cross the dunes. It also feels ‘not so high up’ sitting at the side of the hump, as opposed to on top. It’s a great way to feel young at heart. A visit to the camel farm is a hilarious experience. We saw Andre the giant who fathered 250 camels in 5 years! His friends and family socialized in large pens. gcacnv00028 gcacnv00036 gcacnv00024 gcacnv00033

Food

One of the most traditional Spanish dishes is tapas which is small dishes of different snacks i.e. meats and olives which makes for a sociable meal. A classic dish will have Mojo sauce (pronounced Moho) served with salted small potatoes with their skins left on. The sauce comprises of garlic, chilli peppers, paprika, cumin and vinegar.

The local drink is honey rum.

Gran Canaria caters for all tastes and nationalities – In Playa del Ingles you can find English to Japanese restaurants.
