Bulgaria - Veliko Tarnovo

A three hour drive from the coastal town of Obzor was worth the effort. Taking the motorway from Varna, some of these roads would come across more as B roads than an actual motorway itself. Although some of the country roads can be poor quality at times, I did not get lost.

The modern part of the centre has most of the cities downtown shopping area and restaurnats. From here it is a good idea to walk to the old town. Some building walls have ornate biblical features etched onto them. By taking a walk uphill there are some great views of Veliko Tarnovo. The back streets do have an air of tranquillity.

The main highlight of the day has to be a visit to Tsarevets. This was the main citadel of the capital during the second Bulgarian Tsardom (1185-1393). This medieval civilization was then taken over by the Turks. The main fortress entrance is a cobbled pathway that winds its way uphill (be prepared for the uphill trek - there is a snack area at the top). Here one can see Baldwins Tower, church ruins, the rock of execution and the patriarchal complex. 3cnv00172 3cnv00169

Spectacular views of the town in the valley below and the stone citadel walls make for great photographic shots. Wonder down to the valley and explore some of the orthodox churches such as Sveti Dimitar, St Peter and Paul and the church of the 40 martyrs situated near the bridge. 3cnv00182 3cnv00184
